80s MTV Music Videos The 80s can be defined as the decade that brought us the MTV generation. Created in 1981, Music TeleVision can arguably be called the sound of the 80s, with the added impact of the visual element serving to clinch the deal. Just as the Beatles arrived in the U.S. on TV courtesy of Ed Sullivan, MTV made instant celebrities of anonymous artists like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Boy George and George Michael. Michael Jackson became the world's biggest superstar thanks in large part to extravagant videos that received heavy airplay on MTV.

In 1980, the victory of the U.S. hockey team over the highly-favored Soviets in the Olympics was, in retrospect, the beginning of a decade-long recovery of the national pride. With a new President in Ronald Regan, and an economy on the upswing, the 80s represented a time of relative peace and prosperity. The phasing out of the vinyl single began, soon to be followed by the phasing out of vinyl itself, in favor of cassette tapes and then cds. The theater of the younger generation was clearly MTV, its images indelibly planted in the minds of its observers, and repeated every hour: Cyndi Lauper's tragi-comic soap opera vignette for "Time After Time;" Bonnie Tyler's bravura performance on the overwhelming "Total Eclipse of the Heart;" Foreigner's emotional rendering of "I Want to Know What Love Is;" the heartthrob emergence of George Michael in Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go," and "Careless Whisper". Also in the 80s nearly every popular movie, from Fame to Flashdance to Dirty Dancing to Cocktail, exploited pop songs in an effort not only to sell itself, but to sell soundtrack albums as well.
